Interview on the Use of “Rescue” in the Anti-Trafficking Field

Check out this recent interview on my article “Take off the cape: Why using the word “rescue” is harmful to anti-traffickiTake off the cape: Why using the word “rescue” is harmful to anti-trafficking effortsng efforts” where I speak with Barbara Glickstein of Healthstyles about how we need to elevate our language in the anti-trafficking field beyond the simplistic and misleading notion of “rescuing” victims to be more trauma-informed and victim-centered.

The article has gotten over 1000 Facebook and Twitter shares already!

Colorado Anti-Trafficking Bill Signing!

Colorado Anti-trafficking Bill Signing, 5/11/12

I was invited to be at last Friday’s signing into law of Colorado HB 1151, which allows trafficking victims to take civil action against their traffickers, provides minor victims the option to expunge trafficking related charges and requires the posting of a victim services hotline in massage parlors and escort bureaus.

Here is a photo of myself, Governor Hickenlooper, Representative McCann and advocates from CCASA, COVA and LCHT.

Article Published!

The wait is finally over!  My article entitled “Intimate Partner and Intrafamilial Exploitation: How the Intersections of Domestic Violence and Human Trafficking can profoundly affect our Work” has been published by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) in the 2011 issue of The Voice: A Journal of the Battered Women’s Movement.

The article examines human trafficking by family members and intimate partners and how raising awareness about this form of abuse is crucial in both domestic violence and human trafficking fields.

You can find the article here, on p.42-45: http://shop.ncadv.org/inc/sdetail/116/11519.  There is a $10 fee to purchase the e-journal for non-NCADV members; however, there are a number of wonderful articles in the issue so it is definitely worth the cost!

I’ve also been told that you can search “the voice fall 2011 ncadv” online and find a link to the pdf of the article that way.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me for information regarding training and consultation I provide on this topic and others!

Welcome to Becky Owens Bullard Consulting!

Hello everyone,

I wanted to welcome you to my new consulting webpage and say how excited I am to kick-off this new phase in my work on gender-based violence and human trafficking.  I have enjoyed being a direct service provider and advocate for victims/survivors for 8 years and in the past 5 years, the experience I’ve gained as a trainer and educator has inspired me to concentrate on this part of my work with more emphasis.

I recently made the move from Washington D.C. to Denver, CO and couldn’t be more excited about living and working in Colorado and the Midwest and Western regions (though, I will travel anywhere!).  While our 2 years in D.C. was a great experience for my husband and I, we are thrilled to relocate to the mountains and call Colorado home.

I hope you enjoy the website and please contact me with any questions you might have about trainings or consultations.
